Roseville Asylum Seeker and Refugee Support Group

Our group consists of people from all walks of life, ages, occupations, political persuasions and religious affiliations. We are united in our concern for the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia.

We have four key areas of focus:

  1. To become more active in supporting asylum seekers and refugees living in Australia with practical acts of kindness.
  2. Education of group members and others about issues surrounding asylum seekers.
  3. Advocacy for change in government policy.
  4. Raise money for agencies providing important support services to asylum seekers and refugees.

Here are some examples of things we have done:

  • We have raised $4000 for Uniting Care Burnside (2014) support unaccompanied minors living in community detention, $3500 for the Asylum Seeker Centre in Newtown (2013 &2016) and $3000 for RACS (2015).
  • We collect groceries and deliver them regularly to the Asylum Seeker Centre shop in Newtown. Donations can be made at church services each Sunday or drop off after 4:30pm on Sunday evening.
  • We help cook and serve meals at the Asylum Seeker Centre in Newtown.
  • We have participated in protest rallies, marches and prayer vigils held by various refugee advocacy and church groups

If you are interested in the issue and would like to know more, please contact Gwyn Denton on gwyn@dentons.id.au or contact the church office 9416 5185. You can also check out our facebook page.
